The process of pursuing a PhD comes with numerous mental and psychological challenges, yet this is a topic that is rarely discussed. PhD candidates often face high expectations from their supervisors, schools, friends, families, and even sponsors, which adds immense pressure. Unfortunately, little attention is given to the mental health of these individuals. However, maintaining good mental health is crucial for productivity and success in a PhD program. After all, how can one be expected to complete a PhD without being mentally sound? Being able to defend your work requires clarity of thought, and without that, you may feel unworthy of the degree.
Today, I want to highlight the importance of supporting researchers with positivity and encouragement. It is essential to acknowledge the progress they have made, not just focus on their mistakes. While constructive criticism is important for their development, it is equally important to recognise their achievements, no matter how small. Even when their work seems flawed, appreciate their effort. Such appreciation can prevent discouragement.
So, if you know any PhD students, be kind to them and acknowledge their efforts. Remember, this is the final stage of their academic journey, and it is not easy. If you encounter a PhD student or researcher today, offer them encouragement. And to their supervisors, I urge you to be compassionate and supportive.
