Hills of life: Lessons from a cycling adventure

The day started well. I had a couple of work emails to review, which I completed, and then I was preparing to go for a writing retreat in Canterbury. Just before I left, I needed to print off some documents, so I decided to cycle down to campus. But before I could get there, I needed to pass through a neighbouring town. So I took my bike and got ready. In fact, it was drizzling. So I got on the bike and went from Chatham through Rochester to Strood. It was quite easy actually, though stressful going up and down the hills. But upon arriving at Strood, just between Rochester and Strood, the hill was so steep. However, I had something in my mind. I told myself I was not going to put my feet on the ground. I would keep it slow and steady. When the hill was too steep, I kept it in the lowest gear.

Growing and not “goaling”

It’s a beautiful day, and today I would like to share a highlight from my day, which is about growing and not “goaling.” This is about pursuing growth rather than merely pursuing goals. There’s a clear difference between growth and goals. Often, we live our lives chasing goals, and once a goal is achieved, it feels like that’s it—we’re done. However, my life hasn’t been framed that way, and I haven’t learned to live life like that.

Unaligned Values

The day began with a lot of planning. I also intended to reach out to my younger brother to spend some time on personal growth and development, which was the highlight of my day. Most importantly, I needed to submit an application. Being in the application season is not easy, as each opportunity requires a bespoke application. I had a couple more things to write to finalise it, which is hard work.

2024 PGR Conference: Receiving the 3MT Award, Building Connections and Spinning the Success Wheels

I arrived a bit late because I was sorting out my parking on campus, as I don’t have a permit. By the time I got there, someone else was presenting during my slot, so I had to wait for my turn. When I finally got on stage, I noticed my first supervisor in the audience, smiling at me. His presence didn’t throw me off balance, but I was a bit disappointed that I hadn’t included the findings in my slides, so I had to speak through that part.

Managing Routine: Productivity, Faith, and Progress

Next, I focused on putting together my presentation, which is progressing well. However, I also have a family function to attend, and I’m trying to balance my commitments. Later in the evening, I have a Bible study engagement. You see, various important things vie for my attention, especially if you have faith and religious commitments. Balancing all these aspects remains a challenge that everyone striving to be effective must tackle.

Passion vs. Priority: Navigating Codes and Thesis

I spent a significant part of the day—well, not the entire day, probably a couple of hours—coding. Then I got engrossed in trying to do some other things. It was a fulfilling day because I didn’t have to struggle; I am genuinely enjoying it. Could it be that I’ve found my true path, or is this just a temporary phase? Or perhaps I’m meant to hybridise my knowledge and experience? I don’t know. I’m still pondering. If I told you how much joy and pleasure I derive from doing this, you wouldn’t believe me, considering my background. But then, it is what it is. I’m just following my passion, while trying not to be distracted because I’ve also got a project to finish. Really, just moving forward.

From Couch Potato to Application Maestro

This day is solely dedicated to drafting the applications for the opportunities I want to apply for. It can be very tiring doing these kinds of applications because they are very specific and tailored for each one. Well, if that’s the way to go, this must be done well. One of the things I did to make it less stressful was to start the day off in a relaxed manner. I went downstairs, watched a couple of films, and spent time with the family. When it was time, I switched gears, got on my study laptop, took a shower, freshened up, and then sat down to work on the applications. Bit by bit, I got it done. I even worked on some of them while lying on the bed with my laptop, in whatever position I was comfortable with. I was determined that this task must be completed today.

From 3MT Success to the Birth of a New Venture

Yesterday was also quite fulfilling, as I was able to launch the website for OA Tutors just three days after the idea came up. One of the first things I would like to remind you about is that it’s important to act on your ideas as soon as you conceive them. Otherwise, you will just accumulate ideas without ever acting on them. Good intentions are commendable, but in this world of reality, good intentions alone are not enough. It is all about taking action. When you take action, your intentions produce results.
